Glaucoma Interest Group 2022
Glaucoma Interest Group of the College of Ophthalmologists of Sri Lanka
Glaucoma Interest group of Sri Lanka was founded in July 2012 under the College of Ophthalmologists of Sri Lanka. Its membership includes consultant ophthalmologists who have a special interest in glaucoma and it is a member of the World Glaucoma Association. Its goals are to uplift the knowledge of the ophthalmologists in the country, to facilitate educational programmes and research and to increase awareness of glaucoma among the general public to improve early detection and follow-up of glaucoma patients.
WGA provides following services to members of affiliated glaucoma societies.
- International Glaucoma Review (IGR), the journal for the WGA 4 times a year free of charge (both Hardcopy and Electronic issue)
- Notices regarding the biennial World Glaucoma Congress
- Access to online IGR database, a unique directory comprehensively providing all available glaucoma abstracts since 1999, comments & references
- Electronic newsletters, updating you on WGA activities

Message from the chairperson:
The GIG was started 10 years ago and at that time the main aim was to upgrade and update the knowledge of glaucoma among the membership. Establishing our own glaucoma society enabled us to obtain membership of the World glaucoma Association .Over the years the activities conducted by the GIG have evolved and expanded. In addition to been involved in continuous medical education activities for the membership, it has become the responsibility of GIG to increase the awareness regarding glaucoma related blindness among primary care doctors, paramedical staff like OTs and public health staff and Nursing staff.
The GIG collaborates with the V2020 programme of the College with regard to screeining programmes and public awareness programmes including the media during the world Glaucoma week. Our members have taken these activities to the periphery and have contributed to increasing the awareness regarding glaucoma in the country
Over the years each Chairperson has contributed to the moving towards the goal of eliminating blindness due to glaucoma.
Our members have established a place for us in the international societies of glaucoma as they have participated in many international conferences as invited speakers.
The pandemic has affected the activities with regard to mass screening and public awareness. Even among the diagnosed patients there may be those whose disease has progressed due to failure to continue with medications.
Even in these times of doubt and uncertainty it is our duty to do the best of our ability to minimize glaucoma induced blindness.
